Strengthening local energy initiatives
As part of the STRONG – Strengthening the Role of Municipalities in Citizen-Led Energy Initiatives in Serbia project, implemented by the PET with the support of the European Climate Foundation (ECF), a key meeting was held on April 16 between representatives of the Beli Breg energy community initiative and officials from the City of Vranje.
The delegation from the City of Vranje, led by Mayor Dr. Spec. Slobodan Milenković, welcomed the PET team and the civic initiative behind the formation of the Beli Breg – Popovci Energy Community. This initiative is focused on enhancing the quality of life in rural areas through the deployment of sustainable, renewable energy solutions.
During the meeting, initiative representatives shared their vision and concrete plans, highlighting the potential of community-led energy projects. The discussion centered on identifying pathways for the City of Vranje to provide institutional support for the initiative through strategic planning, community involvement, and the development of a supportive regulatory framework.
The session was facilitated by Predrag Cvetković, PhD, who underscored the vital role that local governments play in enabling the energy transition and empowering citizens to lead the way.
